Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. Define a system.

  1. A submarine is a man-made system.  Ocean currents are a natural system.  How are these systems related?  How does one affect the other?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. A system is a group of parts that work together.
  2. Answers include, but are not limited to: lamp, television, camera, ball-point pen, dishwasher, car, airplane, fishing rod
  3. Answers include, but are not limited to: water cycle, ecosystems, solar system, air currents
  4. Student correctly identifies any man-made system and is able to explain how at least three or more of its parts work together.
  5. Student correctly identifies any natural system and is able to explain how four or more of its parts work together.
  6. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • Submarines and Ocean currents are related because they come into contact with each other
  • Submarines travel through the ocean where they encounter currents regularly
  • Strong ocean currents have the ability to push the submarines in different directions if the submarine is not being steered
  • Submarines have the ability to push through and disrupt currents when they are being driven
