Activities

  1. Match the graphs with the given descriptions.
  1. Thomas’s speed increased steadily over time.
  2. Sophia was running at a constant speed until the end when she gradually kept getting slower until she reached the finish line and stopped.
  3. The city bus making stops along Main Street.

  1. The graph below represents the water level in a bathtub.  Describe what is happening over time.

  1. Sketch a graph to represent the following situation:

A car is traveling at a constant speed.  The car slows down steadily and stops at a red light before accelerating again to a constant speed slightly slower than before.

  1. Create a situation in which your partner will need to sketch a graph.  Be sure to provide an answer key to be used when checking your partner’s work.
  1. Create a qualitative graph for which your partner will need to write a situation.  Be sure to provide an answer key to be used when checking your partner’s work.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Graphs should be matched as follows:

    1. Graph II
    2. Graph III
    3. Graph I
  1. Answers will vary, but should be similar to:
  • The bath water is increasing at a steady rate in the beginning.
  • The water is turned off and the level of water remains the same for a period of time.
  • The bath water is then let out at a steady rate that is a little slower than it was put in.
  • The level ends up where it started, most likely at zero
  1. Graphs should be similar to:

  1. Situations will vary.  Be sure to check that the answer key is accurate.
