Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define function.
  1. State the domain and range of the following relation:  {(2, -3), (4, 6), (3, -1), (6, 6), (2, 3)}
  1. Identify whether or not the following are functions and explain why or why not:

  1. Identify whether or not the following are functions and explain why or why not:

  1. Write the follow as a relation, state the domain and range, and then determine if it is a function with an explanation as to why or why not.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. A function is a relation where each input has exactly one output.
  1. Domain:  2, 3, 4, 6

    Range:  -3, -1, 3, 6
  1. Answers as follows.  Explanations may vary slightly.

    1. Yes, each input has exactly one output.
    2. Yes, each input has exactly one output, doesn’t matter that the output is the same for all of them.
    3. No, the input 1 has two different outputs.
    4. No, the input 16 has no output.
  1. Answers as follows.  Explanations may vary slightly.

    1. Yes, passes the vertical line test so each input has exactly one output.
    2. No, will not pass the vertical line test meaning at least one input will have more than one output.
    3. No, will not pass the vertical line test meaning at least one input will have more than one output.
    4. Yes, passes the vertical line test so each input has exactly one output.
  1. Relation:  {(-7, 0), (-6, 2), (-4, -3), (0, 1), (4, -6), (4, 8), (5, 4), (7, 0)}

    Domain:  -7, -6, -4, 0, 4, 5, 7

    Range:  -6, -3, 0, 1, 2, 4, 8

    No, this is not a function because the input of 4 has two different outputs.  Also, based on the graph, it will not pass the vertical line test.
