Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

  1. You are painting a project in art class and are running low on the color that you like.  You have enough paint to cover 50 square inches of paper.  Do you have enough to finish the project pictured below? Show your work.
  1. Party Hall hosts large parties and wants to create a new brochure to mail out.  One of the rooms is shown below.  Find the square footage of the room for the brochure.  Be sure to show your work.

  1. You are getting a new rug in your bedroom.  Your parents said that you have to pay for half of it because you spilled food on the old rug.  If it costs $20 per square yard how much will you have to pay based on the following diagram of your room?

  1. You are helping plant a garden at your house this spring.  You need to know how many bags of dirt to buy.  Each bag will cover 4 square feet. How many bags of soil would you need to buy to cover the garden below?

  • Find bottom of trapezoid by subtracting 18 – 4 to get a base of 14 ft.

  • Break the shape into three rectangles (two are the same)
  • Total area = 138 ft2

  • Each bag of dirt covers 4 ft2, so you have to divide the total area by the area that each bag covers.  138 ÷ 4 = 34.5.
  • You need to purchase 35 bags of dirt to make sure you have enough, you cannot purchase a half a bag of dirt.
