Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define perimeter.

  2. Determine the perimeter of the shape below.

  1. What is the perimeter of the parallelogram below?

  1. If the side of a regular hexagon is 8 inches, what is the perimeter?
  1. The perimeter of the shape below is 60 inches.  Find the length of the missing side.  Show your work.

  1. Rasheem just bought a new home with a rectangular backyard.  He wants to fix up his yard by putting a fence around it and putting down some new sod.  If the dimensions of his backyard are 80 feet by 60 feet, how much fencing and sod will he need to purchase?  Show your work.

  2. Create a rectangle with the same area as the one shown below, but with a larger perimeter.  Show your work.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a figure.

  2. 18 meters

  3. 82 feet

  4. 48 inches

  5. 6 inches
    Work may include, but is not limited to:
  • Add up all the given sides
    18 + 4 + 15 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 9 = 54
  • Subtract the total perimeter minus what is given to find the missing side
    60 – 54 = 6
  1. Fencing:  280 feet
    Sod:  4,800 ft2
    Work may include, but is not limited to:
  • Fencing – find the perimeter of the backyard
    80 + 80 + 60 + 60 = 280
  • Sod – find the area of the backyard

A = l × w
A = 60 × 80
A = 4800

  1. Answers may include one of the following sets of dimensions: 1 in x 24 in or 2 in x 12 in
    Work may include, but is not limited to:
  • Find the perimeter and area of the given rectangle.

A = l × w
A = 3 × 8
A = 24

P = 3 + 3 + 8 + 8
P = 22

  • List other possible rectangles with the same area

1 x 24
2 x 12
4 x 6

  • Calculate the perimeter of the new rectangles

1 x 24                                      2 x 12                                      4 x 6
P = 1 + 1 + 24 + 24                  P = 2 + 2 + 12 + 12                  P = 4 + 4 + 6 + 6
P = 50                                      P = 28                                      P = 20

  • Perimeter needs to be larger than 22, so the 4 x 6 will not work

20 < 22
