Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify the point of view from a reading passage.

  2. Determine the point of view from a reading passage and tell if the point of view is first or third person.
  1. Compare the point of view from 2 different reading passages.

  2. Distinguish between first and third person narrations in given reading passages.
  1. Compare and contrast the point of views from different reading passages, identifying whether the POV is first or third person.

  2. Explain how the point of view in a reading passage impacts your reaction to events in a story. Take one event from the story and re-write it from the opposite point of view. How does the event change when point of view changes?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student reads a reading passage and identifies the point of view from which the reading passage is narrated.  Student should be able to give evidence to support the POV selected.

  2. Student identifies the point of view from a reading passage.  The student will cite examples from the reading that support choice of POV. Look for evidence that the student understands the difference between the two POVs.
  1. Student reads 2 reading passages and compares and contrasts the point of views for each.  Student should be able to identify first or third person as well as provide examples from the text to support choice. Passages should include a variety of texts, including dramas and poems as well as stories.

  2. Student is given multiple reading passages and is asked to correctly identify the point of view for each.  Student should be able to point to key examples from all reading passages to support claim of POV. Passages should include a variety of texts, including dramas and poems as well as stories.
  1. Student will determine the point of view for various reading passages.  Student should cite examples from the text that support the POV.  Student should discuss the author’s choice in using that POV and how it enhances the story.

  2. Student will explain how the point of view selected by the author impacts the story and the student’s connection to it.  Student will consider the alternative POV and how the story and its impact change with the new POV.  Students will take one event from the story and write it in the opposite POV.
