Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. List the character traits of the main character from a reading passage.

  2. Identify and describe the setting of a reading passage.

  2. Critique a key event in a reading passage and describe how the character could have reacted differently to that event.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student reads a reading passage and identifies the main character of the selection.  Student should list traits of the character using details from the text for support and justification.

  2. Student describes the setting of a reading passage.  Student provides details from the story or draws own inferences from context clues.
  1. Student will provide a detailed profile of the main character of a reading passage.  Student may populate this profile with concrete evidence from the reading or with inferences made from events in the reading passage.

  2. Student describes the setting of a reading passage.  Student will determine the importance of the setting within the reading and support the claim with details from the reading.
  1. Student will describe the motives and traits of the main character in a reading passage.  Student should include concrete descriptions provided by the text as well as inferences generated from the clues provided by the reading.  Students should describe how the main character interacts with the setting of the story and determine the level of impact the setting has on the main character.

  2. Student will summarize a key event from a reading passage and critique the event from the character’s perspective.  Student should include motives for the character’s behavior as well as provide an alternate version of the event.  The alternate version should still be plausible based on the traits of the character.  (For example, the Big Bad Wolf could choose to enter the 3rd Little Pig’s house through a window, thus avoiding being cooked.  He could not, however, choose to live amicably with the little pigs.)
