Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. What type of story is this?
  1. How is a fable different than a basic story?
  1. What is the theme of the passage?
  1. Analyze the text to determine what culture this story is from. What information helped you know?
  1. Explain how the story would change if it was written with our culture in mind.
  1. What is the theme of the story, why is it important and what does it teach us? What was the author trying to say about the culture, and how does it relate to our culture?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will identify the type of story it is. They will recognize whether it is a fable, myth, poem, or folktale.
  1. Students will recognize that a fable has a clear lesson to be learned that is usually stated at the conclusion of the story.
  1. Students will describe the lesson that the author was trying to teach.
  1. Students will identify details from the text that will explain what culture the story is from. They could include the use of words from a different language, information from the illustrations, or information about the setting.
  1. Students will identify details from the text that would change due to the change of the culture.  They could discuss word choice, the illustrations, or information about the setting.
  1. Students will identify the important details. They will explain how these details help the reader to understand the author’s purpose for the passage.
