Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define biotic.  List 3 biotic features that you would find in an ecosystem.

  2. Define abiotic.  List 3 abiotic features that you would find in an ecosystem.
  1. How do the biotic features in a freshwater system differ than those in saltwater system?  How are they similar?

  2. How do the abiotic features in a freshwater system differ than those in saltwater system?  How are they similar?
  1. How are the abiotic features related to the biotic features within a freshwater ecosystem?

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Biotic refers to the living components of an ecosystem.
Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Fish
    • Birds
    • Flowers
    • Trees
    • Insects
    • Grass

  2. Abiotic refers to the nonliving components of an ecosystem.
Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Air
    • Soil
    • Sun
    • Water
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Plants and animals
    • Similar animals (fish, insects, birds)
    • Ocean has many more species of plants and animals.
    • Ocean animals can be much larger than those found in freshwater.
    • Freshwater might be stagnant which may produce algae.

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Both have sun, soil, air, and water.
    • Water follows tidal patterns.  (oceans and lakes)
    • Deep ocean depths do not receive as much sunlight.
    • Freshwater and saltwater both have minerals dissolved in the water, but saltwater has much more salt.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Abiotic features include water, soil, sun, and air.
    • Biotic features include plants and animals.
    • The plants get energy from the sun to make food.
    • The plants get nutrients and water from the soil.
    • Plants need carbon dioxide from the air to perform photosynthesis.
    • Animals need oxygen from the air to breathe.
    • Animals need water to survive.
    • Some animals eat plants that grow in soil.
