Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  2. What is a watershed?
  1. How are a lake and an ocean similar?  How are they different?
  1. Which type of water system do you think is most important for the survival humans?  Use facts to explain your answer.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. A wetland is an area of land that is saturated with water.

  2. A watershed is an area of land that separates waters flowing to different bodies of water.

  3. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Oceans are always saltwater.
    • A lake can be saltwater or freshwater.
    • A lake is enclosed by land.
    • Oceans are much larger than lakes.
    • Both have animals and plants living in the water and on the shore.
    • Oceans are home to many more species of animals and plants.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Aquafers are an important source for drinking water.
    • Oceans cannot provide fresh drinking water.
    • Oceans are a large food source for humans.
    • Wetlands and watersheds do not directly impact the survival of humans.
    • Rivers and lakes may not provide enough food or drinking water to sustain a large population of human.
