Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. What 2 types of fields make up an electromagnetic (EM) wave?

  2. What are the particles called that carry a negative charge and what are they called if they carry a positive charge?

  3. Circle the pairs that would attract:

  1. Describe what happens when a positively charged particle comes in contact with a negatively charged particle.

  2. What is a field? How does a field relate to electromagnetism?
  1. Batteries have different poles. How do batteries relate to particles? Explain why electronics work when positive meets negative.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • Electric force: charged particles exert an electric force on each other
  • Magnetic force: a moving charged particle creates a magnetic force
  1. Negative charge - electron
    Positive charge - proton
  1. Electron + proton, north pole + south pole
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • When a positive charged particle (+) like a proton is near a negative charged particle (−) like an electron, the electric field goes from one to the other.
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • A field is an area around an object where the object can apply a force to another object without touching it. This relates to electromagnetism because there are 2 fields acting together: magnetic and electric.
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • The batteries work very similarly to a magnet’s pole, or even particles. Positive and negative attract to complete the circuit. If you put the positive side of the battery, with the positive side of the electronic, the circuit would not be closed (or able to move), and the electronic would not work.
