Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Match the energy type to the example.

  1. Fill in the flow chart with an illustration to complete the energy transformation.

For example:

  1. Chemical Energy → Kinetic Energy
  2. Electric Energy → Thermal Energy
  3. Potential Energy → Kinetic Energy
  4. Kinetic Energy → Potential Energy
  5. Potential Energy → Chemical Energyà Thermal Energy
  1. Construct a diagram of a simple roller coaster. Label the areas of high potential energy, low potential energy, high kinetic energy and low kinetic energy.

  2. Observe images of a Newton’s Cradle, at rest and in motion. The silver balls are suspended with a thin wire attached to the top of the silver balls so they can move. Write a brief caption explaining the types of energy depicted in both images
  1. Consider your afternoon activities after school (eating a snack or dinner, doing homework, playing a sport, listening to music, playing a game on an electronic device, talking on the phone etc.).
Write a detailed paragraph response explaining at least 2 of the activities and what energies can be observed.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Answers as follows:

    1. Kinetic Energy- II
    2. Potential Energy- VII
    3. Thermal Energy- I
    4. Chemical Energy- IV
    5. Electrical Energy- V
    6. Electromagnetic Energy- VI
    7. Sound Energy- VIII
    8. Nuclear Energy- III
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  1. Chemical Energy → Kinetic Energy: gasoline → car moving
  2. Electric Energy → Thermal Energy: wire → stove
  3. Potential Energy → Kinetic Energy: toy car at rest → Toy car moving
  4. Kinetic Energy → Potential Energy: toy car moving → toy car at rest
  5. Potential Energy → Chemical Energy → Thermal Energy: wooden log → log on fire → heat generated
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:

  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • When the cradle is not in motion it has more potential energy.
  • When the ball is moving it has kinetic energy, while the balls at rest have stored potential energy.
  1. Acceptable responses might include, but are not limited to:
  • Eating a snack- chemical energy and kinetic energy
  • Heating up food in the microwave- Electromagnetic energy
  • Playing a sport- kinetic energy
  • Watching T.V.- electric energy
  • Listening to music- sound energy and electric energy
