Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. List all the materials you can recycle.

  2. In your own words, how is recycling different than reusing something?

  3. Label the following statement as a fact or opinion. Explain your thinking for each.
    1. Recycling is a process that involves man and machines.
    2. Recycling is something all humans can do.
    3. Only people in homes can recycle.
    4. Recycling is hard work.

  4. Most towns and cities have their own recycling plant. Where is the closest recycling plant near where you live? Do you think it differs from other recycling plants? Why or why not?
  1. Some people say there are 3 R’s: recycling, reducing, and reusing. Which do you think is the most important? Explain your thinking.
  1. Imagine you were an unused item. Write a creative short story about how you were reused or recycled. Use as many facts about recycling/reusing as you can.

  2. With the rest of your class, research how recyclables can be used to create energy.  Hold a classroom discussion on what can be recycled and the energy that is created from the recycled products.  Use appropriate books and websites to research the topic.

  3. Why is it important to recycle electronics rather than throw them away? Research and explain 6-8 sentences.

  2. Recycling is when a product is turned into a new material to prevent waste, reusing a product is when you can repurpose the same item in a new way.

  3. Student's answer should include how when a product is recycled, it is used to create something new, and then the process can be continued over and over again when recycled.
